The Venice Carnival is held for 2 weeks a year, and starts two weeks before Ash Wednesday.
Ash Wednesday is the Wednesday preceding the first Sunday of Lent which, in the Roman Rite Catholic Churches and in many Protestant Churches, coincides with the beginning of Lent, a "strong" liturgical period with a baptismal and penitential character in preparation for Christian Easter. (Ash Wednesday from the spring: Wikipedia)
The Venice Carnival is therefore an annual festival. The spectacular event usually ends with the Christian celebration of Lent, which is forty days before Easter on Shrove Tuesday, one day before Ash Wednesday.
The Venice Carnival is famous for its intricate masks carefully constructed and designed for the occasion.
The Venice Carnival began in the 11th century where the Republic of Venice celebrates the victory against the Patriarch of Aquileia, Ulrico di Treven.
Several people began to gather and dance near Piazza San Marco.
The celebration became an annual tradition until it became official as a Carnival during the Renaissance, increasing its popularity during the 17th century.
Carnival was banned in the year 1797 as the use of masks was strictly forbidden.
Carnival returns in 1979 thanks to the efforts of the Italian government to bring back the culture and history of Venice.
Carnival thus becomes one of the main attractions on Venice to promote its culture and history.
