The pyramid of Kukulkan, also known as El Castillo, is a pyramidal monument that dominates the center of Chichén Itzá, a Mexican archaeological site in the State of Yucatán.

Built by the pre-Columbian Maya civilization between the 9th and 12th centuries, the structure served as a temple dedicated to the god Kukulkan, the Mayan Yucatec or "feathered serpent god" closely related to the god Quetzalcoatl known to the Aztecs and others. Central Mexican cultures of the post-classical period.

The pyramid consists of a series of square terraces with stairways up to each of the four sides of the upper central temple.

It is noted that sculptures of feathered snakes run along the sides of the north balustrade, and during the spring and autumn equinoxes, the late afternoon sun hits the pyramid, creating the illusion of a "crawling" feathered snake in the background of the pyramid. The event was very popular, it is still debated whether it is just an effect of nature or the result of purposeful design.
