“I've landed and I have no signal”: what to do right away with your eSIM (even without data)

You've just landed. Your phone is on, the passport-control line is moving, and where the signal bars should be, it says “No Service”. You would need a connection to work out how to get a connection. In this guide we explain why it happens, the most common causes and what you can do right away, even without data: most of the checks live in your phone's settings and don't require internet.

BLIVALE Team· Technical guide / troubleshooting· Reading time: about 13 minutes· Updated October 2026
🔍Does “No Service” mean the eSIM is broken?Often not: it's usually a setting
📴Do I need internet to run the checks? No, almost all of them are in your phone's settings
💬How do I ask for help without data?Airport or hotel Wi-Fi + WhatsApp or email

The arrival paradox: needing internet to get internet

You probably know this scene already, even if you haven't lived it yet. You step off the plane, switch airplane mode off, wait for the bars to appear and... nothing. Or the bars are there, but no page will open. The taxi to book, the “I've landed” message for whoever is waiting for you, the hotel address in an app that won't load: everything depends on a connection you don't have right now.

The most frustrating part is what we call the arrival paradox. To work out what's wrong you'd like to look up a guide, open the support chat, write to someone, and to do that you would need the very connection that's missing. If you scroll through online reviews of eSIM services, “I arrived and it doesn't work” is one of the complaints you read most often, often followed by support that can only be reached through a chat that requires data.

We have good news and honest news. The good news: many of the causes are phone settings, which you can check and fix in a few minutes without any connection at all. The honest news: sometimes the reason is outside your control (an area with no coverage, an installation left half-finished) and then you need human help. We'll show you how to reach it even when you're starting from zero data.

💡 In short

“No Service” on arrival doesn't automatically mean “broken eSIM”. The most frequent causes are settings (line not active, data assigned to the wrong SIM, data roaming off) and you can check them offline. If they aren't enough, plan B is a Wi-Fi network (airport, hotel, café) plus support's WhatsApp or email: even better if you saved contacts and instructions before leaving.

Why it happens: the seven most common causes

When an eSIM doesn't connect on arrival, the causes fall into a few families. The table lists them starting from the quickest to check and shows whether you can fix them without data.

CauseHow it shows upFixable without data?
eSIM line switched off or not chosen for data The eSIM is listed in the settings but “off”; only your home SIM's network, or no network, appears at the top Yes: a single setting
Data roaming off on the eSIM line Bars and network name are shown, but no page loads Yes: a single setting
Cellular data assigned to your home SIM Traffic goes through the wrong SIM, with the risk of roaming charges Yes, but act straight away
Network registration still in progress after landing “No Service” or “Searching” for the first few minutes Yes: a little patience and, at most, airplane mode
Weak coverage where you are standing One bar or none, especially inside terminals, in underground stations, on trains Often yes: move next to a window or outdoors
Incomplete installation or profile not activated The eSIM line doesn't appear, or stays pending activation No: you need a Wi-Fi network and the instructions; ask for help before deleting anything
Plan not suited to the country, or phone locked to an operator No network connects, or the installation stopped No: it has to be checked with support
⚠️ A truth worth knowing

Every eSIM, from every provider, uses local operators' networks. Where those networks don't reach (inside a terminal, in a tunnel, in a remote area) the eSIM doesn't reach either. No provider can create coverage out of nothing: what you can expect is that, as soon as a usable network is available, the connection gets established.

The first 60 seconds: what your screen is really telling you

Before you touch any setting, look at the status bar at the top. It says more than you'd think, and it points you toward the right cause.

  • No bars and the words “No Service” or “Searching”. The phone hasn't registered on a network yet. Check that airplane mode is off and give it a couple of minutes after landing, then move on to the checks.
  • Bars and the name of a local network, but no page opens. The phone is registered on the network, but the data session isn't active. This is the typical picture of data roaming switched off or the wrong data line.
  • Your home network's name at the top. The phone is using your home SIM, not the eSIM. It means cellular data is assigned to the wrong line: fix it right away, because in roaming it could cost you.
  • Wi-Fi icon and everything works. You're on Wi-Fi, not on the eSIM: it isn't proof that the eSIM works. To check, turn Wi-Fi off and see what happens.

Seven checks to do right away, even without data

The order matters: we go from the most likely check to the least likely and, after each change, it's worth waiting a minute or two before judging. Menu names change from model to model (iPhone, Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi and so on), but these are the entries to look for. Before you start, turn Wi-Fi off: that way you'll know for sure whether the connection is coming from the eSIM.

  1. Check that the eSIM line is active. Open the mobile network settings (on iPhone “Cellular”, on Android “Connections” or “Network & internet” and then “SIM” or “SIM manager”) and check that the eSIM line is on. If you gave it a name, for example “Travel”, look for that.
  2. Assign cellular data to the eSIM. In the same section, choose the eSIM as the line for mobile data. On iPhone, if you see the option that lets the phone switch automatically between lines for data, consider turning it off, so it doesn't go back to your home SIM.
  3. Turn data roaming on for the eSIM and off for your home SIM. Travel eSIMs rely on partner networks, so data roaming almost always has to be enabled on that line: follow the instructions you received with your order. On your home SIM, on the other hand, keep it off to avoid charges.
  4. Leave network selection on automatic. If nothing changes after a few minutes in a covered area, you can try choosing another network from the list by hand; then remember to switch back to automatic.
  5. Try 4G/LTE instead of 5G. In some situations the 5G network can be unstable or unusable in roaming. Where your phone allows it (entries such as “Network type” or “Voice & data”), forcing 4G/LTE sometimes unblocks things. It isn't a guaranteed fix, but it costs ten seconds.
  6. On Android, check the APN. Many eSIMs set it by themselves, but some instructions give an APN to enter by hand: if that's your case, check that it's there and typed exactly. On iPhone, the configuration is normally already included in the profile.
  7. Airplane mode, then restart. After fixing the settings, turn airplane mode on for about ten seconds and turn it off; if needed, restart the phone. This makes the phone register on the network again with the right settings.
💡 The two-minute rule

After each change, wait a minute or two before changing anything else. Changing ten things in a row in an area with no coverage only makes you lose track of what worked and what didn't.

Plan B: Wi-Fi and WhatsApp to ask for help

If you've done the seven checks and nothing has changed, it's time to ask a person for help. The key is to use a channel that works on Wi-Fi alone, without depending on the eSIM that isn't responding right now.

Find a Wi-Fi network: it's usually easier than it seems

Many international airports and stations offer free Wi-Fi, sometimes with registration or a time limit; the same goes for many hotels, cafés and restaurants. If the portal asks for a code by SMS, remember that your home SIM may be able to receive the SMS even with data roaming off, depending on your operator and plan. If you're traveling with someone, you can also ask to use their phone's hotspot for a few minutes: it's enough to open WhatsApp.

Write to support on a channel that works with Wi-Fi

WhatsApp works with your home number over Wi-Fi alone, and lets you send screenshots and voice messages. Email works too. A chat on the website works with Wi-Fi as well, but on WhatsApp you're quicker and you talk to a person, which is exactly what you need when something doesn't add up. The more information you give in the first message, the fewer exchanges you need.

✍️ Ready-to-copy message

“Hi, I've just landed in [city / country] and my BLIVALE eSIM won't connect. Order number: [number]. Phone: [model and system version]. I've already checked: eSIM line active, cellular data on the eSIM, data roaming on, automatic network. On screen I see: [“No Service” or bars but no page opens]. I'm attaching screenshots of the settings. I'm on the airport Wi-Fi, so I can reply here.”

And if there's no Wi-Fi at all?

Ask at the information desk where to find a Wi-Fi network, or move toward an area with better coverage: near the windows, outdoors, outside the terminal. A local SIM or eSIM bought at the last minute is a last resort: it can unblock you, but try talking to support first.

The mistakes that make things worse

When there's no connection, the temptation is to do something, anything. Some moves, however, complicate things.

🚫 Better to avoid
  • Deleting the eSIM from your phone. An eSIM profile can normally be installed only once: if you remove it, you may not be able to reinstall it with the same QR code. Write to support first.
  • Resetting the phone or wiping all settings. It's a drastic measure that is rarely needed and can cost you time and data.
  • Turning on data roaming on your home SIM “just to try”. You could end up with unexpected charges.
  • Changing settings left and right where there's no coverage. If the problem is the signal, no setting will fix it: move.
  • Rushing to buy a second plan without checking anything. First check the settings and talk to support.

The anti-surprise kit to prepare before you leave

The difference between a calm arrival and a stressful one is almost always decided at home, when you have Wi-Fi, time and a clear head. Here's what is worth preparing.

  • Compatibility and unlocking. Check that your phone supports eSIM and isn't locked to an operator.
  • Plan coverage. Check that the country you land in, and those you'll pass through, are on the plan's list.
  • Installation over Wi-Fi. Install the eSIM on a stable connection, remembering that activation starts right away (more on this below).
  • Settings check. Right after installing, check that the line is present and active, that data is assigned to the eSIM and that data roaming is set as the instructions say.
  • Offline instructions. Save the email and PDF with the instructions on your phone, so you can read them without a connection.
  • Support in your address book. Save support's WhatsApp contact and check that WhatsApp works over Wi-Fi.
  • Offline plan B. Downloaded maps, saved tickets and bookings, your hotel's address in a screenshot (ideally in the local language too).
  • Home SIM for voice and SMS. Keep it active only for calls and SMS, with data roaming off.

How BLIVALE behaves: documentation and the notice on the QR code

Support that only arrives after you have the problem is half the job. The other half is making sure you already have everything in hand before you board. Here's how we behave.

📦 How BLIVALE behaves
  • We send all the documentation explaining how to install, step by step: you receive it and can save it on your phone to read offline.
  • We always include an important notice on every QR code we send: you'll find it in the email, in the PDF and in the image that contains the QR code.
  • Human support reachable via WhatsApp (24 hours a day) and by email: channels that work on Wi-Fi alone.

Here is the text of the notice, as you'll find it on the Unlimited eSIM's QR code:

⚠️ Important notice about your unlimited eSIM plan

As stated in the eSIM Unlimited description, this plan runs on the local daily time and resets automatically every day at local midnight, regardless of the installation time. If you activate the plan in the late afternoon or evening, please note that the current validity period will end at local midnight. We recommend installing and using your eSIM promptly to make the most of your active day.

In practice: the day of an Unlimited plan follows the clock of the country you're in, not the one at home and not the instant you scanned the QR code. If you install the eSIM in the evening, the current period closes at local midnight. It isn't a malfunction: it's the way the plan was designed, and that's why we invite you to install it and use it a little ahead of the moment you really need it.

Activation: when your days of use start

A detail that is often discovered too late: with BLIVALE eSIMs, the moment you install the QR code, activation starts right away. Your days of use start counting from that instant, not from the moment you land or turn data on.

⏱️ Mind the moment of installation

If you install the eSIM the day before departure or on the same day, you need an active internet connection to complete the installation (your home, hotel or airport Wi-Fi). Plan it calmly, close to the trip but with a network available, and remember that your days start with the installation.

Every choice has its pros and cons, and knowing how it works lets you decide knowingly.

When you installAdvantageWhat to keep in mind
At home, the day before You have your home Wi-Fi and time to check the settings calmly Activation starts right away: your days begin counting before the trip
At home, on the day of departure Stable Wi-Fi and fewer days “used up” before you arrive You need a connection and must leave time to check everything before heading out
At the departure airport There is often Wi-Fi available, and it's right before the flight You have little time to fix any problems and to reach support
After arrival Your days start when you're already at your destination You need Wi-Fi just when you're least ready to look for it: it's the scenario of this guide

Why an Unlimited eSIM gives you peace of mind

When the connection finally arrives, the last thing you want is to do the math on gigabytes. On arrival you need everything at once: maps, the taxi app, messages, tickets, maybe a video call with the people waiting for you at home. With a package of a few gigabytes, every app is a small calculation. With a BLIVALE Unlimited eSIM that worry disappears: you get continuity of connection and a truly unlimited connection, which lets you use the network without watching the meter.

We'll be honest about one thing, though: unlimited refers to data, not coverage. Where there is no signal, there is none with any eSIM. What changes is your peace of mind when there is signal, especially if the trip crosses several countries: one eSIM, one profile, no plan to reconfigure at every border.

📚 Real data and continuity across countries: where to check them

In these articles we report the data consumed and the continuity of connection across several countries, in Europe and in Asia.

📶 Hotspot included: ideal for multiple devices and for families

The BLIVALE Unlimited Premium and BLIVALE Unlimited Smart eSIMs have the hotspot included, so they suit all travelers with several devices, families, and anyone who shares the connection with tablets and laptops.

Most of the other eSIMs also offer a hotspot; however, if you plan to use it heavily, we recommend the BLIVALE Unlimited Premium eSIMs.

The hotspot is also useful as a safety net: if you're traveling as a couple or a family and one phone won't connect, the hotspot of the one that works is enough to open WhatsApp and write to support.

Real number: when data isn't enough

On arrival you don't only need data. You also need a bank OTP code, a sign-up to a ride app, a call to a hotel or a taxi. A data-only eSIM can't handle any of that, and virtual numbers aren't always accepted by apps such as WhatsApp.

📱 BLIVALE eSIMs with a real number

BLIVALE provides eSIMs with a real mobile number for calls and SMS in the country, in the region or globally, and the number can also be used to receive OTPs and to sign up to apps such as WhatsApp, where virtual numbers are not supported.

Landing checklist

Print it in your mind or save it in your phone's notes: these are the steps to follow, in order, when “No Service” appears.

  • Breathe, turn Wi-Fi off and see what the status bar says (network, bars, icons).
  • Check that the eSIM line is active.
  • Assign cellular data to the eSIM.
  • Turn data roaming on for the eSIM and off for your home SIM.
  • Leave network selection on automatic and wait a minute or two.
  • Try 4G/LTE instead of 5G and, on Android, check the APN if the instructions require it.
  • Airplane mode for ten seconds, then restart if needed.
  • Move next to a window or outdoors if you suspect poor coverage.
  • Don't delete the eSIM: you'd need help to reinstall it.
  • If nothing changes, connect to a Wi-Fi network and write to support on WhatsApp or by email with the ready-made message.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Does “No Service” on arrival mean my eSIM isn't working?

Not necessarily. In the first minutes after landing, your phone still has to register on a local network, and the cause is often a setting: the eSIM line isn't active, cellular data is assigned to your home SIM, or data roaming is switched off on the eSIM. These are checks you can make from your settings, without an internet connection.

How long should I wait after landing before I start to worry?

There is no guaranteed time, because it depends on coverage, device and network. As a rough guide, give it one or two minutes after turning airplane mode off; if nothing changes in an area with good coverage, move on to the settings checks.

Can I fix the problem without mobile data?

Often yes, because most causes are phone settings: eSIM line active, cellular data assigned to the eSIM, data roaming on, automatic network selection, airplane mode and a restart. If these aren't enough, you need a Wi-Fi connection to contact support.

How do I contact support if I have no internet on my phone?

Connect to a Wi-Fi network (airport, station, hotel, café) and write to support on WhatsApp or by email: both channels work with Wi-Fi alone. Have your order number, phone model and a screenshot of your settings ready to get a quicker reply.

Should I delete the eSIM and reinstall it?

No, at least not before talking to support. An eSIM profile can normally be installed only once, so deleting it from your phone may stop you from reinstalling it with the same QR code.

Do I need to turn on data roaming to use a travel eSIM?

Many travel eSIMs rely on partner networks, so data roaming almost always has to be enabled on the eSIM line. Follow the instructions you received with your purchase, and keep data roaming switched off on your home SIM to avoid unexpected charges.

When do my days of use start after I install the QR code?

With BLIVALE eSIMs, activation starts right away, the moment you install the QR code: your days of use begin from that instant. If you install the eSIM the day before or on the day of departure, you need an internet connection to complete the installation.

What does the notice about the unlimited eSIM plan on every QR code mean?

The eSIM Unlimited plan runs on the local daily time and resets automatically every day at local midnight, regardless of the time you install it. If you activate it in the late afternoon or evening, the current validity period ends at local midnight: that is why BLIVALE recommends installing and using your eSIM promptly.

Does an Unlimited eSIM guarantee a signal everywhere?

No: unlimited refers to data, not coverage. Signal always depends on local operators' networks, so inside a terminal, in a tunnel or in a remote area it can be missing with any eSIM. An Unlimited eSIM does give you continuity of connection and the ability to use the network without counting gigabytes whenever there is signal.

Which BLIVALE eSIMs include a hotspot?

BLIVALE Unlimited Premium and BLIVALE Unlimited Smart eSIMs include a hotspot, so they suit travelers with several devices and families. Most of the other eSIMs also offer a hotspot, but Unlimited Premium is recommended for heavy use.

Do BLIVALE eSIMs with a real number also work for OTPs and for signing up to WhatsApp?

Yes. BLIVALE provides eSIMs with a real mobile number for calls and SMS in the country, in the region or globally. The number can also be used to receive OTPs and to sign up to apps such as WhatsApp, where virtual numbers are not supported.

What should I prepare before leaving so I'm not left without a connection on arrival?

Check that your phone supports eSIM and isn't locked to an operator, make sure the country is covered by your plan, install the eSIM over Wi-Fi and check the settings right away. Save the email and PDF with the instructions, add the support contact to your address book and download offline maps, tickets and your hotel's address.

Conclusions

Arriving in a new country with no signal is stressful, and there's nothing odd about feeling that way. But in most cases the situation is more manageable than it looks: after reading what your screen really says, a few checks in your settings, done in the right order, are enough to tell whether the problem is the phone, the network or something that needs a person.

What makes the difference is having a plan for when the connection is missing: knowing what to check offline, having instructions and support contacts at hand, and knowing that Wi-Fi plus WhatsApp or email is enough to talk to someone. With a BLIVALE Unlimited eSIM you get continuity of connection and a truly unlimited connection whenever there is signal, and with an eSIM with a real number you also have OTPs, calls and SMS ready on arrival.
